Why are there strange noises coming from my roof?

Structurally, the roof is one of the most vital parts of any property.

Not only is it essential to keeping the property dry, protected from the elements and structurally sound, but it is also a key factor determining the property’s energy efficiency (and so, the cost of your energy bills!).

As a result, it’s imperative that you keep a close eye on your roof, and regularly inspect it for any signs of degradation, or repair or maintenance needs.

A great example of something to monitor regularly is any unusual or unexpected noises.

In many cases, the cause of these noises will be perfectly straightforward. But, by being able to recognise the source of the noise, you can determine what (if any) course of action is needed. Below, our expert roofing team have shared their handy guide to understanding any strange noises coming from your roof.

Why are there strange noises coming from my roof?

Common causes of roof noises

A secure and correctly functioning should be relatively quiet. But, although unexpected noises can be an indicator of an issue, even perfectly functioning roofs will make noises from time to time.

We’ve listed the most common causes of roof noises below.

Thermal expansion and contraction

Roof materials – particularly wood, metal and shingles – will expand when they warm and contract when they cool down. If these temperature changes occur quickly (e.g. from day to night), this can cause noises like popping, cracking or creaking, as these materials shift.

Typical sound: Popping or cracking.

Weather conditions and strong winds

In more challenging weather conditions (e.g. strong winds) your roof can be at risk of a number of potential issues. This includes loosening shingles, flashing, gutter pieces and vents. If this damage does occur, these parts will make a noise as they shift, or if they knock against the surface of the roof surfaces.

Typical sound: Thumping.

Animals and pests

If there are pests or animals – e.g. birds, squirrels or insects – moving on the roof, then this can result in noises. It might be that this is a one-off occurrence. Or, it could be that they are settling in the roof space (e.g. the eave or attic). These noises are usually louder or more common at dawn or dusk.

Typical sound: Tapping or scratching.

Loose or ageing roof materials

If your roof is ageing or if parts are in need of replacement, then this can lead to noises. Common examples include nails or fasteners loosening, decking warping or flashing deteriorating.

Typical sound: Popping or cracking.

Water intrusion and leaks

Sounds of dripping water can be caused by a number of factors, including clogged gutters, poor sealing, damaged flashing and leaks elsewhere in the roof. This will be particularly noticeable after heavy rain.

Typical sound: Dripping.

What should you do about the noise?

As you can see, some noises are simply to be expected, as a standard part of how a roof behaves day to day.

But in some instances, the sounds are an indicator of damage or a bigger issue.

You can decide what the best course of action to take is by:

  • Monitoring the timing of the noise – Is it linked to temperature changes or weather?
  • Checking from the ground for any signs of loose shingles or broken parts
  • Checking the attic for any signs of pests or animals
  • Clearing your gutter and trimming any overhanging branches
  • Speaking to a roofing professional to get their opinion

In some cases, you may need to arrange for a roofing specialist to maintain your roof, or to check for any signs of damage.
